How big your thumbnail really shows
Thumbnails are uploaded at 1280 × 720 but mostly seen far smaller. These previews are drawn at the real pixel sizes, so if your text is hard to read here, it will be on YouTube too. Approximate sizes from YouTube's current layouts; they change with screen width.

How to do it
- Choose a still, a screenshot or a photo.
- Keep the YouTube thumbnail preset selected (1280 × 720).
- Drag the frame so faces and text avoid the bottom-right corner, where the video length appears.
- Download. Large files are recompressed until they are under 2 MB.
What makes a thumbnail readable
Thumbnails are mostly seen at around 360 px wide on phones and even smaller in the sidebar. Crop tighter than feels natural: one face, one object, and room for three or four big words. Anything that sits in the bottom-right corner competes with the duration stamp.
Upload at 1280 × 720 even if your source is 4K. YouTube stores smaller copies from it; starting at the right shape means none of your framing is lost.

Can I use a vertical image as a thumbnail?
Normal videos show thumbnails at 16:9, so a vertical image gets black bars. Crop the part you want to 16:9 instead. Shorts use a frame from the video in the Shorts feed.
What is the YouTube thumbnail aspect ratio?
16:9, the same shape as the video player. Any 16:9 size works (1280 × 720, 1920 × 1080, 3840 × 2160), but 1280 × 720 is the recommended size.
How big does a thumbnail actually appear?
Much smaller than you upload it. In the mobile home feed it fills roughly the screen width (about 360–430 px across). In the desktop sidebar it is about 168 × 94 px, and in search results about 360 × 202. Check that your text is readable at the smallest of these.
Why does my thumbnail look blurry?
YouTube recompresses thumbnails. Start from a sharp 1280 × 720 or larger image, use bold shapes and large text, and save as JPG at quality 90 or PNG so the 2 MB limit is not reached by heavy compression.
Can I change a thumbnail after uploading?
Yes. In YouTube Studio, open Content, pick the video, and under Thumbnail choose Upload file. Custom thumbnails need a verified account (phone verification).
