How to do it
- Choose your photo (it never leaves your device).
- Pick a format: portrait, 3:4, square, landscape, story or profile.
- Drag the frame. Turn on “Show what gets covered” to see the grid thumbnail or story bars.
- Press Crop & download. The file is saved at Instagram’s exact pixel size.
Which Instagram size should you use?
For the feed, 1080 × 1350 (4:5) is the safe default: it fills the most of a phone screen as people scroll. Since early 2025 the profile grid shows posts as 3:4 tiles, so a 4:5 image loses a thin strip on the left and right in your grid. If the grid look matters more than the feed, crop to 3:4 (1080 × 1440) instead.
Instagram rescales anything wider than 1080 px down to 1080 px and compresses it again. Uploading at exactly 1080 px wide gives you control over the crop and avoids a second, blurrier resize.
Stories and Reels
Stories and Reels are 9:16. The top of the screen carries your name and the progress bar; the bottom has the reply box and buttons. The story preset shades both areas so you can keep faces and text in the clear middle.
Questions
What is the best image size for an Instagram post?
1080 × 1350 pixels (4:5 portrait). It shows largest in the feed. Use 1080 × 1440 (3:4) if you want the profile grid to show the full image.
Why does Instagram crop my photo?
The feed only accepts shapes between 1.91:1 (landscape) and 4:5 (portrait). Anything taller or wider is cropped to the nearest allowed shape. Crop it yourself first to decide what stays.
What size is an Instagram story?
1080 × 1920 pixels, a 9:16 ratio. Keep important content away from the top and bottom 14% or so, where the interface sits.
Can I post a full landscape photo without cropping?
Yes. Use the landscape preset (1080 × 566) or crop to square with “fit, add border” on the square-crop page to keep the whole photo with a white or blurred border.
